Sing me a song
Of those beheaded palm trees
In bombardments
And the fields that
Combined your childhood
With the howling of hungry wolves
And your adulthood
Was running on the sharp teeth of ignorance
Gutty and red
Sing me a song
Of unsaid words
That remained broken
Under the collapse of arrogance
Forever
Palmeiras decapitadas
Cante-me uma canção
Daquelas palmeiras decapitadas
Em bombardeios
E os campos que
Combinaram sua infância
Com o uivo de lobos esfomeados
E sua maturidade
Correndo pelos dentes afiados da ignorância
Intestinais e vermelhos

Sobre o autor:
Hassan Basiri passou vários anos de sua juventude em prisões pelo país. Muitos de seus amigos e sua família foram mortos sob tortura; incontáveis foram executados pelos esquadrões de fogo dentro e fora das celas prisionais. O poeta descreve: “Alguns enlouqueceram e perderam o controle… imaginem quantos!”
Basiri é do Condado de Dashtestan, na Província de Bushehr, localizada ao sul do país, no Golfo Pérsico. Atualmente, ele vive e ensina inglês em Teerã, onde continua a escrever poesia como um ato de resistência e esperança por um futuro melhor.
Hassan Basiri is one of the many first convicted for their political activities, thoughts and opposition to the ruling regime in the 1980s, when the Islamic Republic was established by Ayatollah Khomeini, the pioneer cleric and the religious leader of the so-called Islamic Revolution. Surprisingly, he was only 17 when the revolutionary guards arrested him for reading a book describing the life of Salvador Allende, a Chilean political leader.
Hassan Basiri spent many years of his youth in Islamic Republic’s prisons across the country. Many of his friends and family were killed under the inhumane tortures; countless were executed by the fire squads in and outside of the prison cells. The poet describes: “Some went crazy and lost their control … you just name it!”
Basiri is from Dashtestan County in southern state of Bushehr located by the Persian Gulf. He currently lives and teaches English in Tehran where he continues writing poetry as an act of resistance and hope for a better future.
